That's a brilliant album. I've had it on heavy rotation. 8)

A vote for the new Saint Etienne album - Home Counties - as good as anything they have done previously.

Dive in particular is a sublime summer track.

Easily as good as the first two Only Ones albums. Seriously.

Album of the year so far for me... contender for the album of the 21st Century so far.

GIRL RAY- Earl Grey

Image

A bit like Goffin & King meets Gorkys meets Todd Rundgren. And they are just 18 years old. Incredible.

Because we have had several idiotic disturbances the last couple of weeks, why not use Abraham Lincoln's favorite song per the poet Carl Sandburg:
"On April 10, 1865 (5 days before he would be assassinated), one day after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee, Lincoln addressed a White House crowd:
I propose now closing up by requesting you play a certain piece of music or a tune. I thought "Dixie" one of the best tunes I ever heard ... I had heard that our adversaries over the way had attempted to appropriate it. I insisted yesterday that we had fairly captured it ... I presented the question to the Attorney-General, and he gave his opinion that it is our lawful prize ... I ask the Band to give us a good turn upon it." Instead of capture the flag, it's capture the song..

I agree - and the Gorkys similarity (especially of the voices) is almost uncanny - great album, great songs- thanks for the recommendation !

In a similar vein, I would like to recommend the sole 1971 album of US singer songwriter Bill Puka, which I recently found at a local flea market.
He comes across as a male Laura Nyro (which is a good thing , to quote Douglas here) and in one song (which starts at 25:00) he sounds remarkably like Louis Philippe (for those of you who remember the golden days of él records , and to come full circle, had the Girl Ray album been released 30 years ago I'm sure it would have been on él)
Fortunately the whole BIll Puka album is on you tube so you can judge for yourself:
