Best Manchester band

Postby MATT on Tue Oct 21, 2003 6:15 pm

(Subtitled not another bloody list thread)

I was in enemy territory ( only joking) t'other week and was debating the musical merits of Manchesters finest.
Who tickled your fancy?

I'm abstaining for the time being.

Unfortunately I was not able to fit in Simply Red or Take That due to the limited number of choices allowed.
Ready with ready wit.

I'd probably say The Stone Roses in theory, but they were so over-played in my student days that I got sick of them.

So I think I'd go for The Charlatans, though aren't they actually from Cheshire?

The Fall, even if Murk E. Smith refers to them as The Salford Band

I can't really choose as I'm a big fan of them all. Stone Roses, Smiths,Joy Division/New Order, Carpets, 10CC, Charlatans,Fall, Oasis (early years), Hollies. All produced all time classics and I can't really pick one above the others.

voted for the Smiths in the end cos I love them and such a wealth of material in only five lbums deserves it,

Roses were close but, hand on heart, I haven't listend to Second Coming for years. Is one album reason enough? It is good though!!!

Has to be either the Roses or The Smiths. I've voted for the Roses cos of what they've meant to me growing up and their debut is my fave album ever. Second Coming is under rated too in my opinion.

The Smiths had more material and kept up such a high standard throughout their body of work. Anyone with any interest in The Smiths MUST read "Songs That Saved Your Life" by Simon Goddard which is the definitive book of their career and looks at each one of their songs individually while giving a comprehensive narrative of their career.

Homourable mention to New Order too.
