My collection is A-Z by band, then within that, each band is sorted by year released (newest release first). CD singles and EPs follow in order releaseed (newest release first).

That would pose a bit of a problem if you bought The Thrills album Tat! Or The The for that matter :D

No particular order I let my cds pile up around my stereo until it starts to look a bit untidy and then put them back wherever ther's space in the unit...

a-z for me but with oldest albums by each band first
and various artists at the end.cant be arsed to order the cd singles
they just get put in a box with the stuff i dont want on display.
still got about 500 albums on vinyl but my better half wont have
them in the living room so they are kept upstairs in the room that
is referred to as 'my room'
yet again they are stored a-z.
vinyl singles are in the loft (apart from 'did i say' of course) :)
Jim Dandy to the rescue.

Make that three of the same. Except for the "special collections" that are in different areas/cases of their own. And box sets are in their own spot too - not really in order though.

Records get a bit different of a treatment from CDs - genre, then alpha, then release date, but some are grouped by label instead of genre.

And happy birthday Aly!

Mine are in a mess (piles everywhere, current listening by my bed) but if I did have an ordered system, it would be a to z.

Mine are by default arranged A-Z by artist, and alphabetically by title within each artist. Two big sections - listened to, and not listened to yet (way too many of these!)

Lots of stupid exceptions though:
- Most recent first-time listens get their own section
- Most recent purchases not listened to get their own section
- Jazz gets its own section
- Barbershop gets its own section

Comps are usually shelved by title (ie. the Rhino DIY series is all under D). Tribute CDs are shelved with the artist being tributed. Soundtracks are shelved by title, even if the jacket credits it to one artist (ie, "The Harder They Come" goes under 'H', not under 'C' for "Jimmy Cliff").

LPs are shelved same as CDs. 45s are in boxes, mostly not in any order. Some of them are actually listed in the order of their appearance on my year end "Most Played Top 30" countdowns that I did while in high school (what a loser!). Cassettes are semi-alphabetized in boxes but I hardly ever open them. Most of these were $2 specials picked up as experiments when my car had a cassette deck from 1989-1995.

I'd love to have all this in a database, so I could say "hey, I really enjoyed that record, what other stuff from that year do I have?" So far I've been too lazy to implement this though.

If anyone is still reading this bag of wind, congratulations...

I think you have taken the sections too far. Mind you, bassoonnists, are they jazz or are they barbershop? :)

i haven't got that many genres, so i put then in alphabetical order. Compilations and magazine cds go under everything. Oh... the only classical cd i've got is not in a-z order
