Songs in a Waltz time signature

Postby Rosario FC on Thu Sep 17, 2015 8:05 pm

I'm a bit of a sucker for songs in a 3/4 time signature.

Theres been loads of classic and contemporary songs in this style, anyone else fancy a Waltz?

The Beach Boys had a fair number of waltz-type songs in their Friends era ("Friends", "Time to Get Alone", "I Went to Sleep", "Be Here in the Morning"). Such a rich, highly underrated era from them.

.......strangely enough it was that song (although not that version) that came up on shuffle yesterday and got me thinking about Waltzes

Norwegian Woods time signature is 6/8 and Its A Mans World is 12/8 - also known as double and quadruple time respectively just because they work faster than regular 3/4 waltz time.. Norwegian Wood is more like a faster Polka than a Waltz and Its A Mans World is a blues shuffle type..

Some of the Fanclub stuff I've listened to over the years has unusual time signatures like Did I Say, Start Again.. and well theres probably threads on here dissecting every song so best to leave it for another thread..

See I thought Man's World was 6/4 or something. I haven't looked it up but it always sounded one of those tricky one to me so that sounds about right.

Could never work out if Norwegian Wood was 1 2 3, 1 2 3, or 1 2 3 4 5 6! You get the piano music for some of these things and sometimes it's a surprise, like you never really knew the song at all!

Did I Say is 5/4 and is a divil to play. One of my new pieces for 6 is 5/4. I have to count 1 2 3 1 2, otherwise I get so confused.
