PC help ...

I've got one of those old " tower " style modems that I used to use with my old pc ... Think there's some music on there that didn't get transferred from there when I got the laptop.

Have since done away with the monitor / keyboard etc for the pc.

Thought I'd be able to plug it into my laptop via USB A -A Cable and see it from there - and then transfer the music across but it's not recognising any other devices when I tried this ?

Tower style modem????

not sure what you mean by this, do you mean an external hard drive?

A modem is used to connect to the internet and will be part of your router.

If its a external drive you may need a power supply

I'd like you to know that I'd like to help you with this but I don't know the answer. You may wonder why I'm telling you but I wanted to make sure you knew that I'm willing you to succeed.

That said, As Nibby said, do you mean the actual computer tower, not modem?

I've since heard that I could do something with it with a " hdd caddy " ... and also that i could hook it up to the router and a set up a home network and also that I could " route it through the tv and use it for playing music etc ...

SO -

I really need all you technophobes / technocrats / poindexters - to help an idiot out with making best use of this bit of equipment ... thanks y'all

Find the right one for you by opening up the tower and reading the label on the HDD (hard drive) inside.. I'm guessing it would be a SATA drive but best to be sure (also don't throw away any leads attached to the hard drive) this will mean it operates like an external drive (you can connect it to another pc via a usb cable).
And to stream the media off your drive you'd probably need one of these: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/media-streamers/727_7089_70096_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html which could mean if you have another pc you could route that through it and the external drive (your old hdd in its new case) could be plugged in to your pc.
