Nuttier than a squirrel's lunchbox ...

Nuttier than a squirrel's lunchbox ...

Postby In.A.Pickle on Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:08 pm

Just read this ....

"News that a North London supermarket has started stocking grey squirrel meat is a new low-point for foodies.
If you’re tired of turkey, chicken and ham, then Budgens in Crouch End, North London, might be the place to go – the grocery store’s just started selling grey squirrel meat for £3 a go.
Unsurprisingly, animal rights campaigners such as the Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (VIVA) are up in arms about the shop’s decision, claiming it’s barbaric to capitalise on the current cull of the grey squirrels in this manner. The bushy-tailed rodents are being butchered to boost numbers of red squirrels, and Budgens are now being accused of contributing to this 'wildlife massacre'.
Apparently squirrel meat tastes nutty (funny, that), and not dissimilar to rabbit."

I love squirrels :( (Yes, I know I killed one a few weeks ago but it was an accident :( )

Is there any meat on a squirrel? Surely not more than a mouthful?

Having said that, I was laid in bed the other morning, watching the biggest grey squirrel I have ever seen leaping around in my pain in the arse willow tree.
I know they're vermin with a fluffy tail but they are funny.
:D

Probably just enough for a starter. For a very small eater.

That little squirrel that's lying down ... we've got one laying in the road just like that, round the corner from us.
Except he's got his little hands together and looks like he's praying to the skies. Bit late for that. :(

Pigeons 'pop' when people run over them :(

I can't drive so I've only heard it from the roadside.. doubt whoever has run over an animal can hear it from inside the vehicle..

 I am a friend of the squirrel.

My mother appparently ate squirrel during the depression, however they were shot my my grandfather, rather than bought at the store. Then he stopped, because he felt guilty shooting something so stupid it didn't even have the sense to try to run away.
Ain't lost yet, so I gotta be a winner

that truly is crazy. if you're going to start eating urban squirrels who nourish themselves out of bins and all sorts of unpleasant detritus, you might as well go the whole hog and eat the rats and pigeons as well. can't imagine the diet leaves the meat tasting great.

no moral objections, but as you say, can't be much meat on them. a wee fluffy bunny on the other hand...

My dad used to catch them for his family when he was a lad, his father wasn't looking after them properly so as the eldest son it was his responsibility to go hunting for food in the wiles of Inishowen.. I remember when Asda sold them years ago the naked freezer bunny my dad showed me scared the bejesus out of me, think I was 12.. never ate one and don't think I could. I think the same could be said for some people who eat meat as Linda Mccartney put it (to paraphrase) if slaughter houses had glass walls or something.. but then theres the other argument that kids don't know where their food comes from or how it gets there.. don't think I could eat squirrel or bunny though.

Bunny meat is supposed to be bad for you anyway if you eat it on its own or too much of it? If squirrel is being sold has it been tested so its safe for consumption, mind you with all the shite pumped in to animals nowadays that is reckoned to be safe by the farmers and the regulatory boards, what is safe enough to eat these days? Even veg is tainted by the phosphates in fertilisers or the soil its grown in. All this stuff about organic produce.. is anything organic enough to eat? And why the sky high price? Shouldn't food or anything we consume be organic in the first place?

Rant over :D
