The New Pornographers

I picked up The New Pornographers "Electric Version" the other day and nearly lost my mind halfway through Track 3. Excellent stuff. Great harmonies and the hooks multiply with each repeat listen. Whoa! What's everybody else think? Hot stuff!

Chris ive got Mass Romantic and wasnt impressed. Honestly though i only bought it for the Neko Case tracks and yes...it was worht it for them alone.

It was a bit weak for my liking with no real standout tracks.
Should i continue and invest more in them?

Hmmm, Doug, that's a tough one. I bought this after a few recommendations, having never heard the Mass Romantic album. So, I'll have to download a few of those tracks before comparing. But let me tell you, Track 3 rocked from the get go, whereas the other songs took 2 listens to really get into. But rest assured, once I got into them they were bonafide standout tracks. In conclusion: give it a shot.

The CM, I freakin love the New Pornos!! I got Mass Romantic in early 2001 and it remained in my rotation for over a year. That record is sick. More chaotic and noisy than Electric Version, but the songs are just as good. I really like Dan Bejar's (Destroyer) songs on both records. The New Pornos are so damn hook-y, the melodies are just delicious, and the presentation is so energetic. Sort of like TFC's Grand Prix!

Doug: Man, really surprises me that you were unimpressed! That's ok. Even though you are crazy!

The New Pornographers will play some west coast gigs in June. Support is coming from Cinerama. You'll find the exact dates in the "Cinerama US tour" thread.

The one thing that would make the world alright today would be if Teenage Fanclub showed up to play a gig in my house.

saw them at South by Southwest a couple years ago and was under-impressed. had been told I would love them, etc..... not bad, just not something that made me want to go out and buy all their records. (quite honestly, I thought the best part was Ray Davies jumping up on stage to sing one song with them.)

or maybe I was too drunk on all the tequila to recognize their genius. Davies got up there for a reason, right?

Had a listen to Electric Version in Tower today. Didn't buy it for $14. More like the kinda thing I'll pick up eventually for $8-9 used. I like it, but it's the kinda of thing that I have a lot of, already, so I'm undermotivated to pay the new $ for it. As a plain ol' record in amongst all the crap Tower is pushing, it's a clear standout. As a "power pop" record up against others in this general category, I think it's just middle-of-the-pack good. Glad to see it getting a plug in the listening stations of big retailers, but there's better stuff out there.
Ain't lost yet, so I gotta be a winner
