Copy or sampling on Guitar Pop songs OK?

Postby bithead on Wed May 21, 2003 10:47 am

I just talk with RnB about how hard creative things can be to be original. In HipHop or Techno Music, sampling is a well-established method. No one complain about that.In design,I always use some images to make my own work.collage is also well-known in modern art scene.

So how about guitar pop songs???

Oasis is always told they steal chords or riff from beatles or somewhere.lately doug pointed out Serious Drugs / Norman 3 outtro are similar.well I can think of many other songs connect other songs.so the songs has to be original??or copy or sampling is OK??

My opinion is OK.cos today,we see lots of imformations and influences.to be 100% original is so difficult.as long as people can re-invent and make "New" stuff.I think it's fine.

I've heard a few songs where 1 or 2 'tribute riffs' get included deliberately. For example:

Orange Juice - Rip it Up (Buzzcocks - Boredom)
Carter USM - Let's Get Tattoos (Clash - Complete Control)
If this were the Seine, we'd be very suave;
But it's just the rain, washing down the boulevard.

There are millions of songs that steal riffs, or should I say borrow?

Sleeper got sued by owners of the Stranglers copyright I believe?

I think that it is ok, given the amount of chords and combinastion of scales etc, it is almost impossible to write something that has not been done before, I guess that is where different sounds come in and get used.

Was 'Hang On' ever confirmed as a T-Rex tribute?

I thought it was Elastica sampling No More Heroes - could be wrong though...

Elastica also borrowed heavily from Wire.

borrowed? sounds more like stealing to me.

I don't like to recognize guitar riffs on other peoples songs to be honest. Natalia Imbruglia stole James riffs in that song Thorn... it's so annoying... if you can't make riff of your own at least change it a bit.

If it's deliberate/acknowledged (like the songs I mentioned) I think it's cool.

but how do you know whet it is and when it isn't? I never heard Natalia Imbruglia saying she stole it on purpose.
