Calvin Johnson's fans

Postby Narodnaia Volia on Thu Apr 10, 2003 4:34 pm

Am in a very good mood today as I managed to finish my job... so, following Kev's generosity and the fact that i'll be burning a few cdrs this evening...i thought i would give the boarders a gift … not a crappy one, of course
If you are a Calvin Johnson’s fan but too lazy to follow up with his projects I’ll be giving away a copy of the Halo Benders 'Rebel's Not In' and 'God Don't Make No Junk'... so, if you like what he does or at least lo-fi stuff and want it, PM me.

Paul… you’re out, as I’m burning a copy to you anyway.

I was one of those 'don't know' votes - who is he?

Speaking of K Records... the website is great. Check Calvin's Desk section, really cool. (and yeah... Calvin's formed the label). I used to have a stick on my Stratocaster, but hubby said it was tacky and as he used this guitar now he had taken it out

Haven't heard it yet... it's his last album right? It's probably good... i'm yet to find something i don't like by him.

Hi NV - I'm a Calvin fan. We saw him few months ago on his solo/acoustic tour. His new record is great. I'll try to PM you over the weekend (no time now).

Calvin is a rare thing in the world of pop, a true original. Kurt had a K records tattoo on his arm. Norman set up a UK Beat Happening tour once and the London show on that tour were just about the greatest thing I've ever witnessed. Calvin stayed at Norman's gran's house and drove Norman a little crazy I think (Norman is one of the most tolerant individuals you could meet but Calvin is quite intense). Calvin is one of the architects of so much that is good and has been good in International Pop, a hero of the pop underground.
One of wisest purchases of recent years was the 6 CD Beat Happening box set. Hear the wonderful originals of :
Bad Seeds (covered by TFC)
Indian Summer (covered by Eugenius)
Cast a Shadow in My Direction (covered by BMX Bandits and Yo La Tengo) and feel your heart beat faster. Read the excellent book and hopefully you'll be converted.

Think I might have Luna doing that song and maybe also Sonic Boom's Spectrum. Does it go on about 'croquet and baked alaskas' and stuff? If so, that's a good song...

Thanks, that was very pretty :D

I've never got the chance to see the Beat Happening playing... but i actually have a gig recorded by someone, but is pretty bad.
The fact that Kurt had a little K on his arm is my main argument for keeping the sticker on my guitar... not working very well.

God... i left my Beat Happenigs in brazil... am i stupid or what?!

What does this box have? Just the albums or unreleased stuff?

Sonia, PM when you have a chance. I will be copying it to Muffin, but not to worry... i can send you a copy as well...

... feeling very generous.
