Teenage Fanclub Class (For Real)

Teenage Fanclub Class (For Real)

Postby Georgia on Thu Oct 07, 2004 3:12 pm

I kid you not. This Oct-Dec, people in Chicago can take a class on Teenage Fanclub at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Technically, it's a "Power Pop" class, but apparently, they focus on one artist for each 8 week session. Click here to see for yourself. And it's only $125.

"Power Pop"

Surely that's the best name for the next album so far.

This is really cool. Though I don't think playing TFC or GBV songs requires one to "get down".

Wife: "So how was class tonight"?
Husband: "It was great. We learned to play 'Ceramic Cock Einstein'. Wanna hear it?"
Hold my life till I'm ready to use it.

I dunno. Rabid fans of the genre see that and say, "Damn, this could be great. I better check this out!" But, those folks already view a new TFC record as a major event. Unfortunately, "power pop" has become a pejorative for many more who dismiss anything given that label as disposable, formulaic and "not serious enough" to merit attention. They may as well stamp "Nerd Alert Warning" right on the cover it they go with a title like that.

i think all fanclubbers (past and present(ok i got to say that so as i get to have a shot :))) should enroll.

we could then point out...."naw naw naw at this point we rolled a big guy and drank some newky brown / some fosters and/or some jack black" (good for the singing the playing and the thinking).

maybe it'd give folks a better idea of what it's like to be in a band
 8)   :? :(

The seeming wackiness of it aside, this place is actually a nationally recognized institution that does a ton of work to promote music education, plus it has one of the best performance spaces in the city where people from Baba Maal to Magnetic Fields have played. (Though I'm pretty sure a beer swilling GBV performance there would be out of the question - it's carpeted, for one thing...)

Don't enroll, though, Brendan. Demand a kickback!

A friend (and fellow TFC fan) actually told me about it. She works there in various capacities in exchange for mandolin lessons. Her most recent job assignment was to hang around and chat with Nick Lowe while he signed autographs after his show there a few weeks ago.
