Fender Bass?

Postby Ponyboy on Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:06 pm

 Apologies folks, another guitar geek-question...

I know 2 people who might be buying bass guitars soon, both of them are looking at cheap Fenders / Squiers.

Thanks for looking 8)

Which one is headless?
When you're tired, and there's nothing in your head
When you're tired, and feel like going to bed,
Write what you're thinking, and you'll find,
You've left a special message behind.

Either would be cool!

If your mate is looking for an entry-level bass, I picked up a bass by Hohner called a PJ bass, it's got a P-pickup in the middle and a J-pickup at the bridge. I needed one for doing demos. I can't play it amazingly well (my bass player always laughs at my basslines  ), but it's really versatile... you can mix the two pickups for a really nice hollow sound - stick a bunch of reverb on and it sounds like a piano! I think it cost me about £150 or something - certainly less that two ton.

Cheers
Kabir.

i havent played many bass guitars but got a shot of a precision tonight and was good fun , just messing about with it but felt good
playing gigantic and she bangs the drums and attempting to play block rocking beats
only complaint was the neck was heavy i never had a guitar strap on and seemed to lean a bit cracking guitar tho 8)
If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon?
If he was from Mars, wouldn't that be cool?

The precision by fookin mile, but if ye can lay yer hauns on an auld Musicman (place un-pc gay joke here) then it'll blau the knobs off even a pre-cbs precision. Glad you didn't even mention the Rickenbacker, WAL, Hohner Violin, Gibson or other pretenders - there is only one bass in Rock - and the precision is a close second. Snooty sniff.

I asked my boyfriend, he's a bass player. He said you get more tonal range out of a jazz bass, that's what he has.

As a bass player, I can safely say that the answer is quite simple: they are both excellent.

If you're gonna be a rocker, then go for the Precision which has minimal control knobs for adjusting pickups and tone and is basically a case of plug in, look cool and rock.

If you're a budding jazz or funk soul brother, and you can be arsed with fucking around with adjusting your tone and adjusting pickups etc then go for the jazz.

Personally I'd go for the Precision.
Or be different from EVERY BASS PLAYER and get something else. The coolest looking bass is the Hohner violin. Because I have one. Although you might look a prick if you're not up to much and have a really smart bass!!!!

had and epiphone SG bass for while which was fun but it didnt sit nicely when standing up 'cos the strap button as on the back....the imbalance became annoying - still it looked cool:

had a squier jazz for 10 years now and it still works OK (even though it has taken a terrible beating over ther years.)

Just remembered - The BEST bass sound I ever heard was at the Graham Coxton gig at King Tuts recently. The beast in question was a BURNS BISON and it sounded utterly amazing - big and full bodied - but somehow cutting through and remaining completely musical. Utterly fabulous.

I had an Ephiphone too for a while. I had exactly the same problem: it just didn't balance and I couldn't take my hand off the neck for a second, otherwise it just tilted up. Does look cool though doesn't it.
