It's part and parcel of being a Glaswegian, but I don't think we should be complacent about the big issue which divides us.
For too long, the city has been riven by this intense rivalry. Only tonight, me and the vulture had to be separated before coming to blows in a pub car-park, so vehement was our disagreement.
It seems the best solution is a board vote.
They're both great singers, but ..........

the question seems somewhat loaded, inviting images of diamond, sweat dripping down a hirstute eyebrow on a hot summer's night giving it, 'touching you, touching me, touching you' in solemn monotono, begging the listener into submission, or at least hoping that a chorus will kick in sometime soon.

meanwhile it's impossible to imagine jim reid singing without the rain pittering along in it's own intervals which only now and then coincide with the mighty 4/4 wallop of his fantastic group, the mary chain, east kilbride's finest. jim is singing of being 'deep inside' or some such. it doesn't always scan, but his voice is so poignant and soulful that we've already surrendered, and are hanging on to the places and spaces inbetween each drawn out vowel.

meanwhile, a middle-aged lady with bright red lipstick throws a white scarf at diamond. he winks saucily, and says, 'lady, this is for you...'

a hot august night, the greek arena. neil at his peak, his made it the hard way -fag end of the brill building, tower of song. a balmy evening, the band he dreamed of behind him "crackling rosie get on board...." for a few years he was the most important artist since the beatles (my new phrase) unfortunatly it all ended in tears at the winterland s.f. robbie had him join the star studded last waltz event and it seemed robbie was the only one who wanted him there. he left the stage to and is rumoured to have said to dylan "follow that" dylan replies "what am i spoze to do go to sleep ?" then we had the Jazz Singer  but lets remember him in that sparkly suit, white scarf catching a scarf is it appears from the audience thru' the footlights pausing only to wink and dedicate ........

and another thing, had the super band been replaced with a johnny mar gunslinger type we would still today have 14yr old spotty kids with NEIL t-shirts a smiling neil with that wonderous hair beaming back at us.

well in my dream anyway.

i think i'll go for jim. i have to go for jim. really beautiful stuff, great up and down melodies, like a west coast ferry, or, more, a double-decker bus in a new town crawling over potholes. i could never get it when people said it was all noise. for a while i thought it was just me.
i suppose you can remember neil and jim songs. and if someone mentions one you could probably have a go at most of the lyrics, but stuff like hardest walk, never understand, just like honey, sowing seeds, burrow deep inside. psychocandy is one of my favourite albums. a soul mate.
i think neil is more summer night. jim and me are sheltering in the rain, down the empty park, underneath the wooden teepee near the swings. midmorning, while everyone else is at school or work.

Don't forget "Hi Ho Silver" and "I Should've Known Better". Great songs from Mr. Diamond.
